National Bandanna Day

Today is National Bandanna Day, which is run by Canteen - the Australian Organisation for Young People Living with Cancer, who support young people (aged 12-24) living with cancer. This is another great event that features a promotional product, bandannas.

What is interesting about the National Bandanna Day campaign is that the bandanna artwork has actually been designed by urban clothing brand Industrie since 2005. The use of this co-branding makes the promotional product relevant to the people they are trying to target as well as fashion forward. There is nothing worse then a poorly designed promotional product that no-one wants to wear.

Whistling their way into the record books

In September the Asthma Foundation of Queensland whistled their way into the record books by "gathering the largest amount of simultaneous whistle blowers in one area". They hosted the world record challenge at Suncorp Stadium where participants had come to watch a Brisbane Broncos home game. Upon arrival everyone was given a whistle and at a certain point of the match everyone blew their whistles for ten seconds, became a part of history and raised awareness for the Asthma Foundation.

Using Promotional Products in a creative manner such as the example above can be an effective way of generating awareness for charities. Selling promotional items such as
silicone wristbands, bandannas and whistles can be a great way to raise money for charities. Follow this link to our full range of Charity Promotional Products available.

Brrrr...it's cold in here

Today was the coldest October day in Sydney for 16 years! Not only did we have cold weather we also had strong winds, rain and even snow in some areas. Not your typical spring day in Sydney that's for sure .

Hopefully the weather improves and remains warm over the summer but if for some reason Sydney reverts back to winter we have some great
Jackets & Jumpers, Scarves and Umbrellas you can brand with your company logo.

Featured Merchandise Range: The Funpack for Singapore's NDP 08

The theme for Singapores National Day Parade 2008 was 'Celebrating the Singapore Spirit'. This Year Singapore celebrated their 43rd year of independence with their annual parade. One of the highlights of Singapore's National Day Parade was their Funpacks. The way that the merchandise was integrated into the overall event made it a feature.

The Funpack designs were based on three main themes: Creativity, Inclusiveness and “Green”. Under the DesignSingapore-NDP 08 Studio, a design competition was opened to awards-wining young designers to come up with a design that is innovative and novel, yet useful. The selected design uses a recyclable material made from beverage cartons and vibrant artworks depicting the Singapore Spirit created by 11 students from the Very Special Arts (VSA) and the School of the Arts (SOTA) based on their personal experience and impressions under the guidance of 2005 Medallion winner Ms Chng Seok Tin and digital artist Mr. Tan Haur. The design for Perspectives was conceptualized by Terence Woon, 26, an industrial Designer with the Product Innovation & Development Programme at A*STAR SIMTech.

The process generated 10 unique Funpack designs and each pack contains 22 items including an AIR Glove, Cap, Flag with stand, Tattoo, Food & Drink items as well as publications. The AIR Glove is one of the interactive items found in this year’s Funpack. It is a light-emitting noisemaker in the shape of a hand. It bears a natural affinity to how people would naturally clap their hands and cheers with enthusiasm when celebrating. The AIR Glove was designed by 5 students from Temasek Polytechnic, Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Nanyang Polytechnic and National University of Singapore mentored by Philips Design to evoke the spontaneous, playful side of the audience during the parade.

Stop the frizz with this hood on a lanyard

This product is described as a Multifunctional Lanyard with a hood that you can fold through the zipper when not in use so that it looks like, and can be used as a standard lanyard. It is made of 100% waterproof nylon and polyester. Unlike traditional lanyards there is a large area available for logo screen printing or heat-transferred printing on the hood.

I was trying to think who would actually need a product like this and maybe a market would exist if you targeted companies who sell hair-straightening products like GHD. They could do a promotion so when you buy your GHD hair straightener you can get a free hood on a lanyard that you can carry in your handbag always, just in case it starts to rain. After all, how many women do you see running down the street on a rainy day covering only their hair?

The other main market could be hair salons whose customers want to stop the rain from hitting their newly blow-dried or styled hair. Your client could get their hair done and then if there is a sprinkle of rain outside you can give them a branded hood on a lanyard they can wear to protect their hair. You could even print a quirky message like “At Salon X we protect our work from God’s wrath”. It would certainly get people talking about your salon. If this a bit too unusual perhaps a branded umbrella is more the way to go.

You’ll never lose your keys in the ocean again...well maybe

While this key floater key-ring may sound practical I wonder whether anyone would ever use it. The idea is that you attach your key to it when you are at the beach or swimming pool and if it falls out of your pocket you should see it floating next to you. Too bad if you are a surfer and lose your key in the middle of the ocean...maybe we can send out the Lifesaver helicopter to scour the sea for your key; surely they will spot the orange floating keyring from the air.

While this may be a weird promotional item, it does not mean we don’t stock it. Click Here, for more product details on our neoprene floatation key holder.

The Power of Promotional Products

With Pink Ribbon Day coming up on Monday, the 27th of October it has got me thinking about the power of promotional products when it comes to fundraising for charities. If the right product is picked and marketed effectively, it has the ability to raise much needed funds for charities. The best example of this would have to be LIVESTRONG silicon wristbands sold by the Lance Armstrong Foundation.

In 2004 the LIVESTRONG wristband and Wear Yellow Live Strong campaign began and in 2005 the Lance Armstrong Foundation sold more than 55 million wristbands (www.livestrong.org.au). Imagine not only the amount of money the campaign raised but all the awareness it created about Cancer. With more awareness there is a greater chance of prevention and a cure being found; all this generated from a silicon wrist band.

For a full list of promotional products that would be suitable to sell as a charity fundraiser, Click Here.

Forget Secret Santa and stop Recyclers in their tracks

With Christmas just around the corner, I am sure someone in your office has started to try round-up people for the Secret Santa. The poster gets put on the noticeboard with the only response being a groan from the employees; not everyone in the office is keen to be involved because of some bad experiences they have had in the past.

There are some people that stick to the rules, spend their 5 bucks and buy their colleague something meaningful and useful. Then there are those that go above and beyond and spend double or triple the set amount because they are generous and want to give something the person will actually like. And finally...there are the Recyclers.

Recyclers are those people who join the Secret Santa just so the boss doesn’t think they are not a team player for not getting involved; then they dig up an old Secret Santa present their partner was given last year and try to recycle it for their own Secret Santa. Imagine the joy on the receiver’s face when they open the gift to find some mouldy bath bombs. The 30 bucks that person spent on a coffee plunger for Bob from Sales is at least being well received. Tracy from Accounts doesn’t look too impressed with the eatable underwear she was given. Funny...Ray from I.T. thought she would think it a good joke. This is exactly the problem, not everyone shares the same humour and likes as you.

My recommendation...forget Secret Santa and invest your money in something everyone will actually appreciate. Why not get everyone to give $5 each and buy new coffee mugs with personalised names, filled with lollies. The great thing about having your own name on your mug is that it can’t be stolen...unless the thief has the same name as you! Using an idea like this means that way everyone gets the same gift and no-one gets upset at not getting as nice a present as someone else; everyone spends the same amount of money and gets something they will actually use.

Some other ideas could be stubby holders, travel mugs for those long train rides to work or photo frames so they can put photos of loved ones on their desk.To make things a bit more special HR could pick the present, arrange to have the presents gift-wrapped and use the staff social funds to have a BBQ where everyone can open their gifts.

Build it and they will come...or maybe not

I came across this weird promotional product today; it is called a Hover Clock. As its name suggests it is a clock that hovers above its base.

While this product is a novelty I wonder if the appeal would quickly wear off. If you were to give it to one of your customers I am sure they would find it interesting to start with but would probably end up getting rid of it one day when they want something more practical, maybe a clock that displays the date. I think the key with a product like this is to target it at someone who would be interested for long enough to make your promotion worthwhile; for example someone who works in the I.T. or Science industry would be best to target.

For a more practical option click here to see our Clocks & Calculators page.

Don’t blame the tax man for being a Scrooge this Christmas

It’s the Staff Christmas Party and the boss gets up to say his customary ‘we have to work harder’ speech and explain why there are no presents for the staff again this year...”it’s because of that Fringe Benefit Tax thing”; well doesn’t the boss know that the Fringe Benefits tax law changed in 2007? Prior to 2007 businesses were only able to claim up to $100 per employee on Christmas Gifts; anything over that amount would be liable to pay Fringe Benefits Tax at a rate of 46.5 per cent. (Source: Spread the Christmas Cheer to Staff, The Daily Telegraph, Nov 19, 2007 http://www.news.com.au/couriermail/story/0,23739,22779146-37775,00.html)

In 2007 this law was modified to make it easier for employers to reward and thank their staff with a gift at Christmas time. Below is an excerpt from The Australian Taxation Office website outlining the current Fringe Benefits Tax law in regards to Christmas Gifts:

Gifts provided to employees at a Christmas party

The provision of a gift to an employee at Christmas time may be a minor benefit that is an exempt benefit where the value of the gift is less than $300.

Where a Christmas gift is provided to an employee at a Christmas party that is also provided by the employer, the benefits are associated benefits, but each benefit needs to be considered separately to determine if they are less than $300 in value. If both the Christmas party and the gift are less than $300 in value and the other conditions of a minor benefit are met, they will both be exempt benefits.

To read more about Fringe Benefits Tax on employee gifts follow this link to the relevant page on the Australian Taxation Office website: http://www.ato.gov.au/businesses/content.asp?doc=/Content/51481.htm&page=2&H2 . While the information provided is useful as background information you should always check with your accountant before making a decision as some businesses may not be exempt from the tax.

With this knowledge there is definitely no excuse this year to not buy Christmas Gifts for your employees and their partners. For some present ideas have a read through Our Guide to Christmas Gifts and browse through our 2008 Christmas Catalogue.

Getting more bang for your buck...the impact of the U.S. market turmoil

With Australia having such close ties to the U.S. market many businesses have gone into panic mode due to the financial crisis currently affecting the U.S. economy. Whenever something happens in the U.S. market people assume that it will have an impact on the Australian market as well. In order to protect themselves from any market changes that may occur businesses tend to go into fortress mode when all spending stops and they just hold the fort to see how everything pans out. If things do not go according to plan businesses move into phase two of the plan which involves cost cutting. The big boss sits in their office and scans through the books asking where can we say money and then finally the light-bulb moment comes...”I know, we can down-size the marketing department because it’s not like they do anything anyway”. It’s funny how it’s always to marketer who is first to go...it’s like we are a dispensable breed of business executives. Meanwhile you fire the marketing team, the enquiries stop and then what are you left with.

While there may be some merit in this strategy of cost-cutting what if we look at the other end of the spectrum which involves being proactive to counteract the negative effects of the market drop. Instead of cost cutting why not focus on getting more bang for your buck. Now’s your chance to look at our marketing budget and ensure that your money is being invested into advertising mediums that will give you the greatest return on investment.

TV, Radio and Newspaper advertising are quite expensive and tend to follow a mass-market approach which makes it hard to run a targeted campaign using them. Also, you have to think that once that newspaper is printed and read there will be another one to replace it the following day. No one wants to read yesterday’s news so there is very little chance of your advertisement getting repeat exposure with your potential customer.

Let’s compare these mediums to promotional products, one of the most powerful tools in direct marketing. Promotional products allow you to create a long-lasting, cost effective campaign with a good return on investment. Let’s take a mug for example...you give someone a mug and they generally keep it for years; it may even become their favourite mug that they will use every day. If you invest your money in purchasing a good quality mug for your customer that they decide to use daily think about the amount of brand exposure you will get over the life of the mug; the return just keeps on coming.

The key is to pick the right type of product that your customer will actually use, make sure you invest in a quality item that will last a number of years and work the product into your overall campaign.

Million Dollar Lunch

In 1999 a Mexican restaurant in San Francisco called Casa Sanchez put together a promotion that involved offering free lunches for a life-time to anyone that tattooed their logo, a sombrero-wearing mariachi boy sitting on a corn-cob permanently on any part of their body.

Their ambition was to generate customer loyalty and boy were they successful. They had 40 people get the tattoo and those same 40 people started coming in every single day for their free lunch.

The Sanchez family finally decided to do some calculations and worked out that based on 40 people with $8 of free meals per week, the marketing promotion could cost them $5.8 million in lost sales for the business over 50 years (the life of the people involved in the promotion).

My thoughts...Plan and budget before you do a promotion and next time buy temporary tattoos.
